About Big Little Campers

Big Little Campers is a boutique, family run campervan rental company in New Zealand. Their campers are designed and built in NZ, and the whole fleet is certified self contained, which means you can use designated freedom camping spots rather than paying for a holiday park every night.

The range runs from The Little One, a compact van with a slide out rear kitchen, up to The Big One with a hi-top roof and standing room inside, and The Biggest One, their newest and most premium model. They operate from two bases, near Auckland Airport and Christchurch Airport, which makes it easy to do a one island trip or drive the length of the country.

What they offer

  • The Little One: compact two berth van with a slide out rear kitchen
  • The Big One: hi-top van with standing room and an indoor kitchen
  • The Biggest One: their newest, most premium camper
  • Certified self contained vans for freedom camping
  • Pick up and drop off in Auckland and Christchurch
  • Long hire discounts for 14, 21 and 28+ day trips

How to book with Big Little Campers

  1. Pick your route first, Auckland and Christchurch are the only two bases
  2. Choose the van size honestly, The Little One is easy to drive but cooking happens outside
  3. Compare the standard bond against premium insurance before you book
  4. Book early for mid December to February, it is the most expensive and busiest period
  5. Look at winter rates if your dates are flexible, they drop a long way from June to August

Good to know

Where can I pick up and drop off?
Only at their two bases, near Auckland Airport (Mangere) and near Christchurch Airport (Harewood).
Can I freedom camp in their vans?
Yes. The vans are certified self contained, so you can use designated freedom camping spots. Those spots cannot be booked and fill up fast, and local council rules still apply.
What licence do I need?
Drivers must be 18 or over with a full licence in English. Otherwise you need an International Driving Permit or a certified translation alongside your home licence.
Is insurance included?
Standard cover comes with a $5,000 bond. Premium insurance reduces the bond to $0 for a daily fee. Check what your own travel insurance covers before paying extra.
